Paintless Dent Repair

How Paintless Dent Repair Works

Paintless dent repair is also known as paintless dent removal, or PDR for short. PDR is the technique of removing dents, without the need for painting. This technique requires special skills, tools and an artist’s touch.

The PDR providers at Mike’s Collision in Ashland are highly trained, experienced and utilize top of the line tools for paintless dent repair work. Because PDR does not require painting, the cost of paintless dent repair is lower than traditional dent repair work.

Automotive paintless dent repair is best suited for dents and dings such as hail damage, door dings, minor body creases or bumper indentations. If your vehicle has been in a major collision and requires extensive auto body repair work, paintless dent repair is probably not the solution.

PDR is not a suitable solution if the metal has been deformed or creased too strongly and has caused the paint to crack.

How Does Paintless Dent Removal Work?
PDR can be used to repair dents in both aluminum and steel panels. The dents in the car panels are gently pushed out from the underside of the body panel using metal rods. Fluorescent light or a special reflection board help the technician see the bumps and dents in the metal. The specialist has to have a good eye for seeing when the metal has been pushed out sufficiently to restore a smooth surface and not cause a new bump or crack the paint.

Why Is PDR The Better Option?
Wouldn’t it be easier to just “bang the dent back out”, without the need for special tools and highly trained PDR technicians? It might be quicker to bang the dent out, and slap on some paint. However, matching new paint to the existing paint on a car can be near impossible, even if you were to use the paint from the same bucket as the original paint. Remember, the paint on your car will have been exposed to sun, rain, temperature swings, possibly salt and sand. Even a slight difference color between the patch of new paint and the existing color, is visible to the eye. This means that and entire panel will need to be painted, adding to the cost.

What Are The Limitations Of Paintless Dent Removal On A Car?
Paintless dent repair is not possible when the metal has been severely stretched or creased and the paint is cracked. Scratches and/or any other paint damage can also not be repaired with PDR.

Cars older that 1990 might not be candidates for PDR, since the paint on those old cars is not as flexible and resilient as the newer paints.

Bring your car to Mike’s Collision in Ashland and our trained PDR experts will apply all their skills to make the dents go away with paintless dent removal.
